1950 - 1960s: Mixed Media Collages

During this period, Jarvaise began to develop the mixed media collage technique that would be experimented with throughout his career. Working in an improvisational fashion, Jarvaise assembled a range of found objects, paint, industrial materials, and metals to compose these works. In this series, Jarvaise selected a limited palette, allowing the contrast in colors to bring forth distinctive abstract forms. These studies provided inspiration for larger works to come, namely in the artist’s “Serie Noire.”
